Duties of the Municipal Tax Assessor

N.J.S.A. 40A:9-148.1 establishes the duties of the municipal tax assessor

"The tax assessor shall have the duty of assessing  property for the purpose of general taxation."

Important Tax Appeal Information:  Property owners should review their property record card and assessment information with the municipal tax assessor. Many concerns can be answered and resolved locally.

Please be aware that the assessed valuation is the basis for which Municipal, School and County budgetary requirements needed to be raised by taxation are apportioned among the residents, therefore an appeal complaint is based on the assessment and not on the property tax amounts.

If a property owner desires to file an appeal, an appeal form is required to be filed with the Hunterdon County Board of Taxation on or before April 1st of the tax year. If the assessment is in excess of $1,000,000 then an appeal may be filed directly with the State Tax Court.

The County Tax Board appeal form may be obtained by contacting the board office at 908-788-1173. Further helpful appeal information is located on the Hunterdon County Tax Board's website: http://www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/depts/taxboard/hearings.htm

Tax Appeals:  Please note that you cannot appeal your taxes, only your assessment.  If you are dissatisfied with your tax assessment, you may speak  with the tax assessor.  If, after speaking with the assessor, you wish to contest your assessment, you may file an appeal to the Hunterdon County Board of Taxation.  This may be done between February 1st to April 1 st each year.
